Hope for a world without violence

Today, I want to share with you an excerpt from Unexpected Ways to Find Fortitude in Turbulent Times (Psychology Today).

We can all identify with Frodo’s observation in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, The Lord of the Rings:

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Faced with the prospect of losing everything—one’s family, home, country, or life—a person is confronted with what is important and what is not. For those of us who have not faced such extreme hardships, it is easy to equate a good life as simply one that is comfortable.

As Viktor Frankl put it,

The question can no longer be ‘What can I expect from life?’ but can now only be ‘What does life expect of me?’ What task in life is waiting for me?

Thank you so much for reading!
